2003 Dissertation by Guru Das Singh Khalsa, as part of his MMus in Ethnomusicology, The University of Texas, Austin, USA.

Abstract:

This dissertation is an exploration of compositional elements and stylistic trends in Gurmat Sangeet. Composition in this genre, as well as with most Indian classical, devotional, and folk music, is tempered by the skill of the performing artist, who is adept in the use of improvisational techniques and a distinctive “trademark” style.
